The Moravian Church of South Africa is hosting the 9th Provincial synod at the Mentors country estate in Jeffrey’s Bay in the Kouga Local Municipality. Members from the various districts and various provinces were warmly welcomed under the theme: “Do everything in love”. As part of the opening of the 9 th Provincial Synod, Moravians were reminded on what is a synod and the role of synod in the life of its members. Members of the Synod were reminded that the word synod comes from the Ancient Greek ‘assembly, meeting’; the term is analogous with the Latin word concilium ‘council, meeting’. Originally, synods were meetings of bishops, and the word is still used in that sense in Catholicism, Oriental Orthodoxy and Eastern Orthodoxy. Also this means that a synod is meetings to discuss matters of importance in the church.
