Watchword for the Month
But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the LORD on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare.”
Rev M Marinus
Dear Congregation, brothers, and sisters, have you ever at some time of your life been moved to another place, community, or city? Being moved without your choice or forcefully removed/relocated because of either your job or a situation beyond your control?
In some situations, it was by your own choice and in others caused by someone else. And now the question that comes to mind is…how we cope when we find ourselves in this new environment. How do you deal with the new situation and how do we fit into our new place?
This must have been also the challenges that the exiles in Babylon experienced because of their forceful relocation.
And now in this difficult time the prophet Jeremiah comes with words that the exiles do not understand, especially because Jeremiah was not much liked, and he was outspoken and harsh with his words of prophecy.
He was resolute in a time of difficulty and told the Babylonian exiles that they will stay in this foreign land for seventy years.
This was in a time of political unrests, economic uncertainty, corruption, and hatred. Hatred because they were unwelcome, in this foreign country and they did not want to be there, believing that God… the God of their forefathers had deserted them.
Nothing new to us, brothers, and sisters…the times we find ourselves in were experienced by the exiles of Babylon. And now in the uncertain time of COVID we look to the God who promised that He will never leave nor forsake us.
And we also hear these words that Jeremiah told the Babylonian exiles: you will be here for a long time…COVID is here to stay.
But our text for the month of October 2020 asks of us something different…SEEK PEACE AND PRAY…
How is this possible, dear friend, when in my own life….in my own community…my own situation makes me question the existence and presence of a loving God? And God does not say peace somewhere else…do not dream of peace in the future…no, rather peace just where you are.
Pray and find peace amidst the trials and tribulations of your life…..Find peace and pray to God during this uncertainty of COVID-19. Peace brings wholeness and wellbeing in any situation where we find ourselves in. MAKE THE BEST WHERE YOU LIVE…Choose life and peace and you will live.
Jesus promises the disciples before He leaves the earth…Peace I leave with you; my peace I leave with you.
May God, through the power of the Holy Spirit, let you experience the power of His peace in the new month but also in our prayer life and during this difficult time we find ourselves in.
Let us continue to pray…LORD MAKE ME AN INSTRUMENT OF YOUR PEACE….AMEN
